Coalition Letter: “Summer of Opportunity” Exception

The GVCCC joined a coalition of business and civic organizations urging New York City to adopt a temporary exception to Local Law 18 short-term rental restrictions for June 1–July 31, 2026. The request is tied to an unprecedented series of global events coming to the city this summer, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, Sail4th 250 celebrating America’s 250th birthday, and Fleet Week, which together are expected to draw millions of visitors and generate over $4.8 billion in economic impact.

With approximately 135,000 hotel rooms already averaging around 97% occupancy, the coalition argues that hotels alone will not be able to accommodate the surge in visitors. A temporary, tightly regulated exception allowing limited short-term rentals in owner-occupied homes could help expand lodging capacity, support small businesses, and ensure visitors stay—and spend—across New York City’s neighborhoods.
